Why fixed prices for SEO aren't workable
Pricing variations for some actual sites SEObyCanz have done SEO worked on:
Local SEO:
- 6 main page website 6 months ago for local optimisation, and required a $360 investment for my time
- 4 main page site for $650 as the site was ASP and the code was written by an inexperienced coder and needed a lot of cleaning up before SEO code could be added
National SEO: Actual Prices I charged
- 1 site 5 html pages $950
- 1 site 5 pages database driven site, $1500
- 2 sites 6 pages each $1200
Combined SEO: Actual prices I charged as compared to prices quotes above.
- Large E-commerce website like above with 350 products, for 8 main keyphrases, and 70 minor keywords the owners investment in my SEO work was $1850 so you see how standard prices just don’t work.
- Large E-commerce website selling 550 gemstones. $2500 over 18 months.
- Large Gay Tourism Website, with 30 main pages, 250 secondary pages $4200
- 5 page Hotel accommodation site $850
- Very large e-commerce website built on our own SEF CMS, with 14 main pages over 1000 products $500. Since the site was built on our Search Engine Friendly, Content Management System(SEF CMS) most of the SEO was done, so client only required search engine and directory submissions. Total cost for site was $4000, less than what it would have costed to optimize the clients old website.
Here are some pricing outlines to give you an idea of the investment you could make in SEO.

I request an investment of between $50-$150 per hour depending on the type of work required; I sub-contract out all time consuming work, so you don’t have to pay more than need be. t
National: 5 main pages $1300
National: Website offer products or service Nationwide. Owners of these sites want their site to be found on a Local and National level, they just want people to know where their local shop or office is.
They aren’t interested in posting products overseas, so don’t particularly want people from other countries to find their website, so there is no need to optimise for this.
E.G. Shopping Chain, National Home Help Business, a Clothing Manufacturer, nation franchise, car dealership, Artist, any business not wishing to export their products, but just wanting to service their own country or state.
Again the site may have more WebPages but some pages don’t require SEO.
The SEO work for these type of sites,
- Analyses of chosen keywords and keyphrases, and suggestions of possible changes
- Changes to webpage code(visitors don’t see these changes)
- Sometimes suggested wording changes on the page (visitors will see this)
- Submission to several local search engines and directories.
- Article writing and submission to relevant directories.
- Look at ways to increase website content without changing the look of the website.
- Plus other techniques that will be discussed with client directly related to their particlar business.
International SEO: Websites that want to export products, or have services of interest to International visitors. The owners are therefore interested in visitors from the local area, national and worldwide finding their website.
EG: Hotel, Nationwide Car Rental, Designer Clothing, ,
This is where prices for optimisation gets tricky, they may have only 5 or 6 main webpage’s, but could also have several product pages, that are worth optimising, if this is the case, we would discuss the different options.
- Analyses of chosen keywords and keyphrases, and suggestions of possible changes
- Changes to webpage code(visitors don’t see these changes)
- Sometimes suggested wording changes on the page (visitors will see this)
- Submission to several Local and International search engines and several hundred international directories.
- Look at ways to increase website content without changing the look of the website.
- Plus other techniques that will be discussed with client directly related to their particlar business.
- Discuss Ongoing monthly contract to enhance work done.
International SEO 10 or 20 main page website + possibley several product pages $3500 +
This could be the same businesses as above just have more main pages. I often give a general quote of $100 per extra main page. Most often these sites will have many product pages, and be a database driven website, this can help or hinder the optimisation process, so a site with say 200 products could cost an extra $400 to optimise, and yet another site with 200 products could cost $6,000 to optimise if the site wasn’t built on a database. In cases like the latter one, I would suggest they rebuild the site, as a new e-commerce website with optimisation would cost less to rebuild and do the SEO.
EG: E-Commerce, Auctions, Airlines, Accommodation Directory's, Motels, Hotels, Any Tourism website or website wishing to sell globally.
